Great Torrington has a great deal of history surrounding it. It is known as the Cavalier Town due to the significant role it played in the English Civil War.
It is situated on the top of an inland cliff, providing extraordinary views of the valley and River Torridge below – views which have been largely uninterrupted through the centuries. A thriving and charming town it is proud of the heritage and traditions passed down through generations.
The shops are local and independently owned and for entertainment, the Plough Arts Centre hosts live music and comedy shows as well as art exhibitions and workshops. Other facilities include a swimming pool and several beautiful parks.
A bit of history:
Great Torrington appeared in 1086 in the Devonshire Doomesday Survey!
