Recreation

The  lifestyle of North Devon reflects the beauty and peace of the area.  Those who live and work in North Devon have a very peaceful and laid-back view on life.  Once work is done, North Devonians like nothing better than to make the most of the beautiful countryside in which they live.

A huge majority of those who relocate to North Devon have done so for lifestyle reasons and you can understand why; with stunning open countryside, beautiful beaches and proximity to the sea, it is the perfect place for those who have an interest in the outdoors.

There are plenty of activities for you and your family to get involved in; horse-riding, surfing, walking, kayaking, fishing or cycling… Plus there’s so much history here and so much to see and do that even if the weather gets the better of you then there are plenty of indoor attractions to keep you busy!  North Devonians also love nothing more than putting on a great party - and we have events to celebrate everything from food to surfing to pebble throwing!

Culture

North Devon's culture comes predominantly from it's maritime history.  With ancient tales of smugglers and wreckers, to modern day shipbuilding there is an assiociation with the sea in everything you come across.  The North Devon Maritime Museum based in Appledore is an ideal way to take in our local seafaring past.

As well as the sea, the beauty and diversity of the rest of the North Devon landscape has been the inspiration for many great writers, with authors basing their novels on the stunning scenery around the area. 'Lorna Doone', written by RD Blackmore, is a romantic novel set in late 11th Century in Exmoor, Charles Kingsley wrote the novel ‘Westward Ho!’ (on which the town was eventually named), and of course the much-loved story about 'Tarka the Otter' was written by Henry Williamson who spent many hours writing about what he saw on the waters-edge.
