Area & Location > Braunton

Braunton claims to be the largest village in Britain, and is also an extremely important area of archaeological and natural interest.

Its welcoming nature and beautiful surroundings won it the title of Winner of Best Village for 2006, and the older parts of the village with ancient cottages and tiny streets add a real feeling of history and character.

The village has everything you would expect from a small town – supermarkets, chemists, butchers and bakers plus many great surf shops and award-winning cafes, restaurants and pubs.

Braunton Burrows which sits between Braunton village and Saunton Sands Beach is a huge expanse of sand dunes - the largest in the UK - which stretches 6km along the shore and 2km inland.  Aside from being a unique place due to its UNESCO biosphere status, it is also a walkers paradise and is a great place for taking the dog!

'Explore Braunton' is a new community project, established by the North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership, which aims to bring to life the wealth of resources for local residents, visiting public and school children in a way that has never been seen before.  Find out more about the history of Braunton and this fascinating new project.

A bit of history:
Braunton Great Field on the outskirts of the village is a famous archaeological site and one of a very few remaining examples of mediaeval strip farming.
