Today Bideford is known as the little white town and it has changed little over the years. It is a large market town and port with an active fishing industry. It is a pretty town which has a recently developed quayside which enhances the River Torridge that runs through it.
Within walking distance of the shopping district is beautiful Victoria Park where you can walk the dog, play with the kids – or even paddle in the outdoor pool.
Amongst the many buildings and places of interest you will find the historic covered Pannier Market, dating from 1883, which holds a market every Tuesday and Saturday. Alongside the history you will find modern shopping amenities, and a wide choice of bars and restaurants. Two new supermarkets have been built in the area which emphasises the continued development of the district to become a new commercial centre for North Devon.
Being south of the Torridge means that house prices tend to be slightly lower than those towns and villages in the north of the region.
A bit of history:
In the 16th Century, Bideford was Britain's third largest port and it is rumoured that Sir Walter Raleigh landed his first shipment of tobacco here.
Charles Kingsley, author of The Water Babies and Wetsward Ho! was Bideford’s most famous former resident.
